The Basics: Creative Digital Problem Solving

“We’re all confused. Some of us are just better at being confused.”

There’s a quiet assumption that some people are “good with technology,” and others just… aren’t.

But that’s not really true.

Anyone can learn how to navigate digital tools and software. Not only that — it can actually become something enjoyable, even empowering, once it starts to make sense.

The challenge isn’t intelligence or ability. It’s how we’ve been taught to approach the digital world in the first place.

Most people think they need to understand everything on the screen in front of them before they can use it properly. Every button. Every setting. Every option.

But even professionals don’t work that way.

A lot of experienced photographers, for example, don’t know what half the settings on their camera do. They don’t need to. They’ve learned the handful of tools that matter to them, and more importantly, they’ve learned how to navigate uncertainty when something happens.

That’s the real skill.

Because the digital world is always shifting. Interfaces update. Buttons move. Features change. Things that worked yesterday might look completely different today.

Confusion isn’t a sign that you’re doing something wrong.

It’s the environment.

The people who feel confident using technology aren’t the ones who know everything — they’re the ones who have learned how to move through that confusion. They’ve practiced slowing down, reading what’s in front of them, trying things, undoing mistakes, and figuring it out as they go. And yes - you absolutely pick up on a few tricks along the way!

Creative digital problem solving isn’t about memorizing steps.

It’s about learning how to understand what your screen is asking of you, and responding to it with patience, curiosity, and a willingness to research and experiment in order to achieve a specific goal.

It’s the practice of approaching digital tools with a simple question:

How can I make this work?

Not perfectly. Not immediately. Just… what’s the next step?

The Basics: Creative Digital Problem Solving

This post is the start of a series called The Basics: Creative Digital Problem Solving.

Each piece will focus on one small, practical concept — the kinds of things that often get overlooked, but make a huge difference once they click. These topics unlock the ability to navigate most digital tools and software comfortably.

We’ll be exploring topics like:

  • Clicking vs double clicking

  • Left click vs right click

  • Undo and redo

  • Files and saving

  • Programs, apps, and software

  • Accounts and passwords

  • Searching and using browsers

  • Storage (folders, memory sticks, and cloud storage)

  • Websites and how they work

  • Email basics

  • Text and documents

  • Editing

  • Copy and paste

  • Researching

  • Drag and drop

Nothing complicated. Nothing overwhelming. Just clear, approachable explanations that help you build confidence from the very ground up.

Because the goal isn’t to keep up with technology - nobody can. It’s to feel capable in facing digital challenges as you try your best to keep up, just like the rest of us. 😵‍💫
